Prosocial crowdfunding was originally conceived as a financial mechanism to assist vulnerable unbanked populations, typically excluded from formal financial markets. It subsequently grew into a billion-dollar scheme (Kiva 2020a, https://www.kiva.org/blog/1-billion-in-life-changing-loans ) in the multi-billion-dollar crowdfunding industry. However, recent evidence claims prosocial crowdfunding may be shifting away from its goal to support the poor and underserved. Drawing on a composite social responsibility and framing theory framework, we examine the role that vulnerability plays in successfully raising funds in a prosocial crowdfunding context. (...) We conduct multilevel logistic regressions on a sample of microloans allocated to 105,727 ventures in 64 countries. Our results indicate that applying for funds through a field partner which caters to vulnerable populations may in fact have a negative effect on the entrepreneur’s request to be fully funded. Notwithstanding, framing the entrepreneur as being female or rural as key characteristics of individual vulnerability increases the project’s likelihood to be fully funded. This conflict offers noteworthy theoretical and practical implications for ethics in prosocial crowdfunding, an understudied field of research. (shrink)

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in hiring entails vast ethical challenges. As such, using an ethical lens to study this phenomenon is to better understand whether and how AI matters in hiring. In this paper, we examine whether ethical perceptions of using AI in the hiring process influence individuals’ trust in the organizations that use it. Building on the organizational trust model and the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology, we explore whether ethical perceptions are shaped by (...) individual differences in performance expectancy and social influence and how they, in turn, impact organizational trust. We collected primary data from over 300 individuals who were either active job seekers or who had recent hiring experience to capture perceptions across the full range of hiring methods. Our findings indicate that performance expectancy, but not social influence, impacts the ethical perceptions of AI in hiring, which in turn influence organizational trust. Additional analyses indicate that these findings vary depending on the type of hiring methods AI is used for, as well as on whether participants are job seekers or individuals with hiring experience. Our study offers theoretical and practical implications for ethics in HRM and informs policy implementation about when and how to use AI in hiring methods, especially as it pertains to acting ethically and trustworthily. Even though management scholars have offered several views on the process of corporate sustainability, these efforts have focused mainly on the technical aspects of sustainability while omitting the fundamental role played by individual moral competences. Therefore, previous work offers an incomplete and somewhat reductionist view of corporate sustainability. In this article, we develop a holistic framework of corporate sustainability in which both the moral and technical aspects of sustainability are considered. We do so by integrating the ethical, normative perspective of (...) the Catholic social teaching with the competitive view of the natural resource-based view. This framework highlights the importance of CST principles and ideas in developing executive moral competences such as moral sensitivity and awareness, and moral cognition and motivation. Moral competences, in turn, influence the organizational selection of environmental strategies, giving leaders the intrinsic motivation to promote both a longer-term stance on corporate sustainability efforts and a relentless search for greener business models. Such strategies move the firm closer towards achieving environmental sustainability. Hence, by bridging the individual, normative-ethical with the organizational, implementational levels of corporate sustainability, our framework provides a more realistic, coherent, and complete perspective on the complex process of achieving corporate sustainability. La asignación de valores veritativos que le asigna la lógica bivalente al condicional, en la definición tabular estándar, se basa en categorías de índole gnoseológica, incompatibles con el carácter formal y abstracto de las estructuras lógicas. La lógica pretende calificar con categorías gnoseológicas, estructuras formales no-gnoseológicas. Esta asignación evade el rigor de logicidad que demanda toda estructura formal y por lo tanto, carece de necesidad racional.

O conceito de mimese, distinguindo-se das concepções clássicas pensadas por Platão e Aristóteles, apontará, na leitura de Nunes, para a dramaticidade vivenciada por meio da linguagem na sua tentativa de falar sobre o mundo e o “eu” que o descreve. El presente artículo analiza el desarrollo de las Elecciones Municipales Complementarias 2019 en doce distritos en los que se declaró la nulidad del proceso luego de las Elecciones Regionales y Municipales 2018 en el Perú. De acuerdo a la legislación electoral de este país, la declaración de nulidad de un proceso es competencia del Jurado Nacional de Elecciones y se produce debido a dos causales. En el primer caso, once distritos tuvieron que repetir su proceso electoral debido a que el (...) conteo de votos nulos y en blanco, sumado o separado, superaron los 2/3 del número de votos emitidos. Mientras que, en un solo distrito se declaró la nulidad del proceso debido a la inasistencia de más del 50% de votantes producto de la no instalación de las mesas de sufragio. Más allá del argumento jurídico sobre la nulidad de los procesos, es necesario considerar un factor como la violencia electoral que estuvo presente en todos estos distritos. El proceso electoral en estas circunscripciones fue interrumpido debido al descontento de los ciudadanos con el desarrollo del proceso y las amenazas de violencia electoral. Es así como, es posible incluir a esta variable como un factor explicativo para la interrupción de los procesos electorales. Así, la presente investigación desarrolla un análisis cualitativo, en base a la información recopilada por la Oficina Nacional de Procesos Electorales. Este estudio hace especial énfasis en las dinámicas propias de la gestión electoral en distritos con alta probabilidad de sufrir conflictos electorales y describe la forma en que se interrumpieron las elecciones subnacionales en estas circunscripciones. La estructura lingüística «el ser» que maneja la filosofía como un supuesto sustantivo, deriva de formas verbales arcaicas y polisémicas, lo cual determina la vacuidad semántica del supuesto sustantivo «el ser». Éste no es sustantivo, ni concepto, ni principio: es un flatus vocis. La ontología y la metafísica, a fin de subsanar los vacíos conceptuales de sus respectivos sistemas, se han visto obligadas a hipostasiar u ontologizar lo que es una simple estructura verbal asignificativa: «el ser».

It critically examines how legal conventionalism has dealt with this issue. In particular, it criticizes the way in which contemporary conventionalists represent the perspective of participants in legal practice on the basis of cognitive mental states. It also criticizes the way in which they understand how the rule of recognition constitutes the practice. Recent decades have brought environmental justice studies to a much broader analysis and new areas of concern. We take this increased depth and breadth of environmental justice further by considering restorative justice, with a particular emphasis on reconciliation efforts between indigenous and non-indigenous citizens. Our focus is on the reconciliation efforts taken by the indigenous/non-indigenous jointmanagement structure of Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park. Usinga framework of restorative justice within a bivalent environmental justice approach, we consider the current management policies at the (...) Park, particularly as it pertains to the controversial climb of the rock, Uluṟu. Our exploration of restorative environmental justice depends upon narrative analysis of embodied ecotourism affects in order to determine the capacity and obstacles of reconciliation efforts in the current management policy. Interviews with tourists from the Greater Sydney Metropolitan Area supply us with cases that provide affective experiences and a postcolonial narrative analysis of touring practices that we argue are imbued with nationalism and colonial naturalism that must be transformed in order to meet the requests of the Park’s traditional indigenous owners. We argue that restorative justice, within a bivalent environmental justice framework that already emphasizes other distributive and recognition measures, is vital for overcoming these obstacles for Australian environmental heritage. The first version of this piece was written for the opening panel of the 2017 Conference of the Association for Feminist Ethics and Social Theory in Florida. The panel, “Decolonial Feminism: Theories and Praxis,” offered the opportunity for Black and Latinx feminist philosophers and decolonial scholars to consider their arrival to decolonial feminisms, their various points of emergence, and the utility of decolonial politics for liberation movements and organizing. I was prepared to discuss some genealogies of US Latina decolonial feminisms (...) with a focus on the relationship of decolonial feminisms to other feminist articulations—for example, a consideration of the relation and divergence between decolonial and postcolonial feminism. I was particularly interested in examining some of the “decolonizing constellations of resistance and love” created by Black, Indigenous, Latinx feminisms. I wanted to track the intergenerational labor of relationality as a part of women of color politics and to discuss how these politics unseat coloniality in its variant iterations. (shrink)

The article focuses on representing different forms of non-adjunctive inference as sub-Kripkean systems of classical modal logic, where the inference from □A and □B to □A ∧ B fails. In particular we prove a completeness result showing that the modal system that Schotch and Jennings derive from a form of non-adjunctive inference in (Schotch and Jennings, 1980) is a classical system strictly stronger than EMN and weaker than K (following the notation for classical modalities presented in Chellas, 1980). The unified (...) semantical characterization in terms of neighborhoods permits comparisons between different forms of non-adjunctive inference. For example, we show that the non-adjunctive logic proposed in (Schotch and Jennings, 1980) is not adequate in general for representing the logic of high probability operators. An alternative interpretation of the forcing relation of Schotch and Jennings is derived from the proposed unified semantics and utilized in order to propose a more fine-grained measure of epistemic coherence than the one presented in (Schotch and Jennings, 1980). Finally we propose a syntactic translation of the purely implicative part of Jaśkowski's system D₂ into a classical system preserving all the theorems (and non-theorems) explicilty mentioned in (Jaśkowski, 1969). The translation method can be used in order to develop epistemic semantics for a larger class of non-adjunctive (discursive) logics than the ones historically investigated by Jaśkowski. (shrink)

This article examines the application of the ought‐implies‐can principle in the legal domain, especially in the relationship between obligations and responsibility. It addresses the challenge of cases in which an agent cannot do what is required of her, and yet it seems plausible to say that she has an obligation. To deal with these cases, two parallel distinctions are made: between rules of conduct and rules of imputation, and between doings and things done. It is proposed that these distinctions show (...) that the principle operates in two different but complementary ways: as part of prescriptive relations and as part of responsibility practices. Physicians are frequently consulted by people with physical symptoms that, after having ruled out an "organic" pathology, we suspect they are related to the most frequent psychological conditions in the usual consultation: the various forms of reaction to severe stress (Acute Stress Reaction and Adjustment Disorder, from ICD 11), "functional" pathologies, burn out syndrome, and anxiety disorders, especially Generalized Anxiety Disorder, with or without associated depression. They are usually given a brief explanation about these problems and how they affect their (...) health, given a brochure, or suggested a website with information. And then they are encouraged to visit a mental health practitioner. But there are some challenges to this seemingly simple scenario:Not all patients are ready or willing to hear that their health problem might be related to their life or emotions. Many are strongly influenced by mind-body dualism. Others have an intuition that such a relationship exists but bringing that to consciousness is not an easy process, because it can awaken emotions that are difficult to handle. This is quite frequent in people suffering chronic anxiety (DSM-5 Generalized Anxiety Disorder) who prefer to consult medical providers rather than psychologists (Wittchen H. U. et al. 2002), because they do not consider their constant and excessive worry to be related to their discomfort. In their worrying they are hoping for a straightforward solution. Durante las últimas décadas se ha visto un desarrollo acentuado de las perspectivas críticas y categorías de análisis latinoamericanas gracias a proposiciones de estudiosos como Juan Villoro, Juan José Saer y Ricardo Piglia que enriquecen las posibilidades de exploración de las creaciones literarias. En lo que respecta a este estudio, se rescata el trabajo intelectual de Piglia en relación con la categoría analítica de secreto y su aplicabilidad en el género _nouvelle_. En esta ocasión, se ha optado por analizar un (...) clásico de la literatura, _Otra vuelta de tuerca_ (2015), de Henry James, para verificar las posibilidades de reconstrucción de un secreto, entendido a la luz de las reflexiones de Piglia como un elemento fundamental en la trama que no está narrado en la historia visible, y que, sin embargo, se puede volver a narrar a partir del trabajo investigativo del lector. Para este fin, es pertinente examinar el espacio diegético en la narrativa, analizar el problema del narrador y abordar la posible reconstrucción del secreto en la _nouvelle _de James. Este trabajo de reflexión evidencia la complejidad literaria y el valor estético intensificado en las obras de este género, y del clásico de James en particular, ya que los recursos de ambigüedad y la sucesión de narradores múltiples enriquecen el valor del elemento oculto, a partir del cual se reconstruye una nueva lectura según las precisiones críticas de Piglia. Tan pronto como los politicos populistas se hacen con el poder siguen tres estrategias: colonización el poder, clientelismo en masa y legislación discriminatoria, basada en la escisión schmittiana del demos entre amigos y enemigos, según tres sistemas de clases sucesivos: el clásico clasismo economicista, el metaclasismo y el hiperclasismo. El feminismo punitivo es así el resultado coherente de la evolución del populismo punitivo.

This article presents arguments that seek to facilitate the understanding that the concept of Political Religion - as well as the authoritarian political experiences represented by it, such as Nazism and Stalinism - can be thought of in conjunction with the concept of fundamentalism. Furthermore, this article also presents possibilities for the concept of Civil Religion - which can also be classified as a Public Religion - even though it is often associated with political experiences considered democratic - such as (...) those of the United States and France - can also be considered in conjunction with that of fundamentalism. Therefore, this paper, carrying out an activity of delimitation and conceptual problematization, will define the concept of Political Religion, differentiating it from the concept of Civil Religion, and in a certain way from that of Public Religion, in an attempt to demarcate a concept of Public Religion, which has been mobilized, sometimes with a certain imprecision, by researchers from different areas. Although the objective of this article is not to empirically test the aforementioned concepts, by delimiting them, enhancing them, we seek to contribute to better yields in future analytical experiments.
